Two ways to find a skipper

Choose how you want to search.

Both routes end in the same place — a confirmed skipper and an organised trip. Pick whichever suits how fixed your plans already are.

01 — Search yourself

Browse available skippers

Search by sailing area, dates, languages and yacht experience. Read profiles, reviews and hosted trips before you contact anyone.

Sailing area Dates Languages Yacht experience
  • Best for
  • Flexible trips and open dates
  • Comparing profiles side by side
  • A destination you already know

02 — Let skippers come to you

Post your trip

Tell us your route, yacht and dates. Suitable skippers in that area can review the request and send you an offer with a clear fee.

Before you start

Skipper request

Post the trip once. Compare the offers.

Skippers who sail your area and are free on your dates can review the request and reply with a fee and a message.

  1. 1 Fill in the trip details below.
  2. 2 Verified skippers in that area see the request.
  3. 3 Offers arrive with a clear fee and what it includes.
  4. 4 You compare, ask questions, then confirm one.

Your contact details are never shown publicly. Skippers see the trip, not your identity, until you choose to reply.

Step 1 of 5
Step 1 — where you are sailing

Where are you sailing?

The sailing area matters most — skippers are matched to waters they actually know.

What happens next

From posted trip to confirmed skipper.

No auction, no bidding war and no pressure. Skippers who can genuinely do the trip reply, and you take your time.

01

02

Receive skipper offers

Available skippers for your area and dates can respond with a fee, what it covers and a short message.

03

Compare

Review experience, sailing areas, reviews and the offer itself. Ask questions before you decide anything.

04

Confirm

Choose a skipper and the trip moves into Malaka — documents, payments, messages and route in one place.

What an offer looks like

Every number, in writing, before you commit.

A skipper offer is a proper commercial document — not a message asking you to call. Here is a sample.

Malaka asks skippers to state the commercial terms up front. If something is missing from an offer, ask before accepting it.

Verification

Profiles you can actually evaluate.

A name and a photograph tell you nothing. A Malaka skipper profile is built so you can judge whether this person suits your boat, your crew and your water.

Counts are prototype values. In the live product this panel reflects real availability for your dates.

    Yacht experience

Match the skipper to the yacht.

Geography is only half of it. A skipper who is excellent on a 45ft monohull is not automatically the right person for a 50ft catamaran in a crowded August bay.

    Monohull

Traditional sailing yacht handling — heeling, reefing, Med mooring stern-to under the bora or the meltemi.

    • Most common
    • Sail-focused

    Catamaran

Different handling under engine and sail, wider berths, twin helms and a very different docking technique.

    • Space & stability
    • Specific experience

    Larger yachts

Over roughly 55ft, additional qualifications, insurance conditions or a second crew member may apply.

    • May need extra tickets
    • Check insurance

    Unknown yacht

Still deciding, or waiting on a charter confirmation? Post the request anyway and add the boat details later.

    • Add details later
    • Offers can be revised

    Crew fit

    The crew matters too.

The best skipper for a family with two small children is rarely the best skipper for four friends who want to race the afternoon breeze. This is why the request asks about people, not just boats.

    First-time sailors

Patient briefing, gentler passages, more time in sheltered water and someone who explains rather than instructs.

    Experienced crew

You want to sail the boat yourselves. The skipper is there for judgement, local knowledge and responsibility.

    Families

Swim stops, short hops, early anchorages and a skipper comfortable with children moving around the deck.

    Mixed-language groups

Safety briefings have to land with everyone on board — language is a practical requirement, not a preference.

    Social trips

Towns, restaurants and late evenings ashore. Some skippers love this rhythm; others plan around dawn starts.

    Active sailing

Longer legs, more miles, night passages and trimming that actually matters. Say so and you will be matched properly.

    Sample request

    This is what skippers see.

Practical, specific and anonymous. Your name and contact details stay private until you decide to reply to an offer.

    Pricing

    What does a skipper cost?

Skipper pricing varies by destination, yacht, dates, trip complexity and duration. The ranges below are indicative prototype values — the real number always comes from the offer.

    Weekly skipper service

    €1,300–€2,000 / week

    • A standard Saturday-to-Saturday charter week
    • Higher in peak weeks and for larger yachts
    • Usually includes check-in and briefing

    Short private trip

    €250–€400 / day

    • Day sails, weekends and short deliveries
    • Travel time is often charged separately
    • Minimum durations may apply
Indicative prototype values only. Every offer states the skipper fee, what is included, extra expenses and when payment is due — that document, not this page, is the price.

    Transparency

Skipper fee, and everything around it.

Most disputes in this market come from one place: an unclear line between what the skipper charges and what the trip costs. Here is the usual split.

Commonly billed on top of the skipper fee

    • Skipper meals during the trip
    • A skipper cabin or berth, where one is required
    • Travel to and from the yacht
    • Local transport during the trip
    • Accommodation before or after, if needed
    • Delivery expenses on repositioning trips

Normally trip costs, not skipper costs

    • Marina and mooring fees
    • Fuel and water
    • Provisioning for the crew
    • Tourist taxes and national park fees
    • Charter deposit and insurance excess
    • End cleaning and yacht extras
Every offer should clearly separate the skipper fee from trip expenses. If an offer does not, ask the skipper to itemise it before you accept.

    Payment

Nothing changes hands until you accept.

    1

    Request

Posting a trip is free. No card, no deposit, no obligation.

    2

    Offer accepted

You choose a skipper and a booking is created with the agreed terms.

    3

    Deposit

A deposit is paid through the platform to confirm the booking.

    4

    Final balance

The remaining balance follows the schedule set out in the offer.

    5

    Trip

Operational details move into the Trip Workspace for both sides.

    After booking

Once the skipper is confirmed, the trip becomes organised.

Malaka is not a lead marketplace that disappears once contact is made. The confirmed booking opens a shared Trip Workspace for you and your skipper.

    • Trip overview, route and daily plan in one place
    • Skipper, yacht and crew details together
    • Documents, payments and the agreed schedule
    • Messages, calendar and meeting details for day one
    How the workspace works

    Booked elsewhere

The yacht doesn't have to come from Malaka.

Even if the boat was chartered somewhere else — or it's your own — the trip can still be managed inside the platform once the skipper booking is confirmed.

    Messaging

    Ask before you commit.

You can message a skipper before accepting anything. Most good bookings start with three or four honest questions.

Route Yacht Crew Logistics Expectations Flexibility
Hi Marko — we're 8 on a Bavaria 46, first week of June. Two of us have sailed, the rest haven't. Is Vis realistic in that time? You · 14:02
Comfortably, yes. I'd do Split–Hvar first, then Vis on day three when the crew has settled. If the maestral is strong we can flip the order.Marko · 14:26
And do you sleep on board? You · 14:31
I take the forepeak or the saloon, whichever suits you. It's in the offer so there are no surprises later.Marko · 14:33

    • Start and end dates

    Questions

    Before you post a request.

Yes. That is exactly what this part of Malaka is for. You keep your yacht arrangement as it is and book only the professional skipper who will run it.

No. The yacht can be your own, chartered from any base, or booked through another platform. Once the skipper booking is confirmed the trip is still managed inside Malaka.

You post the trip; verified skippers who sail that area and are free on your dates can respond. Each offer states the fee, what it includes, expenses, availability and how long the offer stands. You are never obliged to accept one.

Yes. You can hold conversations with as many skippers as you like and compare offers side by side. Only accepting an offer creates a booking.

Identity is verified and the professional sailing licence is reviewed, along with VHF or SRC certification where relevant. Profiles show what has been checked; the underlying documents are never published.

Sailing area, dates, departure marina, yacht type and size, number of guests and their sailing experience, and a sentence or two about what you want from the week. Anything you don't know yet can be added later.

That is normal and completely fine. Give the departure marina and a rough idea of what you'd like to see. Route planning is part of what a good skipper brings — and local knowledge usually beats a route planned from home.

Usually the customer, and it should be stated in the offer rather than raised later. Skippers based near your departure marina often have little or no travel cost, which is one reason local matching matters.

Normally not. Skipper meals are typically covered by the crew, either from the boat's provisioning or as a daily allowance. The offer should say which arrangement applies.

Usually yes, most often in the forepeak or the saloon. If every cabin is taken by your group, agree the sleeping arrangement before accepting the offer — and remember it reduces your usable berths by one.

A booking is created on the agreed terms, a deposit is paid through the platform, and the trip opens as a shared Trip Workspace with your skipper — documents, payments, messages, calendar and meeting details in one place.

Yes, under the cancellation terms stated in the offer you accepted. Those terms are shown before you confirm, so read them alongside the fee rather than after.

Yes — that is the most common case here. Add the charter details to the request so the skipper knows the base, the model and the check-in time.

Yes. Set the yacht type to catamaran in your request and offers will come from skippers with catamaran experience specifically — handling, docking and systems differ enough that it is treated as a separate qualification on Malaka.
