“We booked for the route, but the biggest difference was how calm the week felt. When the wind changed, Marko explained the options and adjusted the plan without making it feel like we were losing anything.”

Booking modes

Different ways to join. Different experiences onboard.

Reviews often read differently depending on how the trip was booked. These are recurring themes, not rules.

Whole Yacht

Reviews often mention…

  • Privacy — the boat belongs to your group for the week
  • Crew control — who comes, and how the days are shaped
  • Route discussion with the skipper rather than a fixed plan
  • Group organization — invites, documents and payment split
“Booking the full yacht worked well because we could invite the crew afterwards and everyone completed their own trip details.”

“The route changed slightly because of the forecast and ended up being better for the kids.”

First week onboard

What first-time sailors wish they had known.

Most of the useful advice on this page did not come from us. It came from people who had never slept on a boat before.

“I expected sailing to feel more technical. The skipper explained enough to make us comfortable without turning the holiday into a course.”
First-time sailorGreece · berth4.8
“The motion took me a day. After that I stopped noticing it, and the second night at anchor was the best sleep of the week.”
First-time sailorCroatia · cabin4.7
“I brought a hard suitcase. Nobody said anything, but there is genuinely nowhere to put it. A soft bag would have disappeared under the bunk.”
First-time sailorItaly · cabin4.6
“We helped with the sails when we wanted to and sat in the shade when we didn’t. Nobody was keeping score.”

Shared space matters

Yachts are compact. Cabins are for sleeping; the cockpit is where the week actually happens.

Soft luggage helps

Hard-shell suitcases are awkward onboard. A duffel folds flat and stows out of the way.

Weather changes plans

Routes shift with the forecast. Reviews that mention this almost always mention it positively.

You do not need to know how to sail

On beginner-friendly hosted trips the skipper runs the boat. Helping out is an option, not a duty.

Solo travellers

Coming alone does not mean sailing alone.

Berth and cabin reviews from people who booked without knowing anyone else on board.

“I came alone and left feeling like I had actually been part of the trip, not just a passenger.”
Solo travellerCroatia · berth5.0
“Two couples, three of us solo. It could have split into groups and it didn’t, mostly because the skipper ate with everyone.”
Solo travellerIonian · berth4.9
“As a woman travelling alone I wanted to know the sleeping arrangement before booking. It was written on the departure page, which settled it.”
Solo travellerGreece · cabin4.8

Crew chemistry

Mixed departures are usually six to eight people. Reviews describe a small crew, not a tour group.

Social expectations

Dinners are shared more often than not. Reading a book on the foredeck is also completely normal.

Comfort and safety

Cabin allocation, shared heads and who you share with are stated on the departure before you pay.

Meeting others

Several reviewers mention swapping details at the end of the week and sailing together again.

Whole-yacht groups

When the crew is already yours.

Reviews from group leaders, families and friends who took the whole boat and invited the rest afterwards.

“I booked as the group leader and sent the invites the same evening. Everyone filled in their own details, which saved me chasing eight passports.”
Group leaderCroatia · whole yacht5.0
“Clear communication before departure made provisioning and arrival day much easier.”
Group of friendsTurkey · whole yacht4.8
“With two families onboard the rhythm mattered more than the mileage. We anchored early most days and nobody minded.”
FamilyCroatia · whole yacht4.9

Group Leader

One person books and holds the departure. The rest join with their own trip details.

Crew invites

Reviews mention this most often as the part that removed admin from the trip.

Private route rhythm

Where you stop, how long you swim and when you eat is agreed with the skipper.

Flexibility

Forecast-driven changes are common. Groups rate them well when they are explained early.

Skipper spotlight

Skippers crews keep mentioning.

Themes pulled from what reviewers wrote — not a ranking, and not a badge the skipper applied for.

How reviews work

Better reviews come from real trip context.

Reviews linked to completed trips provide stronger context — the route, the booking mode and the yacht are already known, so the writing can be about the week itself.

  1. 01

    The trip finishes

Reviews are associated with a booking and a departure wherever the platform can make that link.

  2. 02

    The customer writes

The experience and the skipper can be reviewed, with an overall rating and a few optional aspect ratings.

  3. 03

    The skipper may respond

Where the product supports it, a skipper can add one clearly labelled response to a review.

  4. 04

    Anything inappropriate is reported

Readers can report content that contains personal information, abuse, spam or anything that looks fabricated.

What can be reviewed

Overall trip

How the week worked as a whole.

Skipper

Communication, briefings, seamanship and hosting.

Route

Pace, stops and how changes were handled.

Yacht

Condition, comfort and how it suited the crew.

Organization

Information before departure and on arrival day.

Value

What the week delivered for what it cost.

Booking process

Optional. Useful when the booking itself was the friction.

Kept deliberately short

A small set of aspects gives more useful averages than a long list of sub-scores.

This describes the intended model for the product. It is not a claim that every review on the platform has been independently verified.

Writing a review

What makes a review useful?

The most-read reviews are rarely the most enthusiastic ones. They are the specific ones.

Useful reviews usually mention

  • Which booking mode was used — whole yacht, cabin, berth or skipper-only
  • Whether the reviewer had sailed before
  • How communication felt before and during the week
  • What changed during the trip, and how it was handled
  • What genuinely worked — and what did not
  • One thing a future guest should know before they board

Critical feedback is as welcome as praise. A page of uniformly perfect reviews helps nobody choose.

A specific review reads like this

“Cabin booking, first time on a yacht. The pre-departure email said which marina gate to use, which mattered at 11pm. We lost Bisevo to the wind on day four and the skipper suggested an alternative that morning rather than at the last minute. The heads are shared — fine for us, worth knowing. I would book the same route again, ideally a week earlier in the season.”

Community stories

Solo travellerIndividual berth

First berth booking in the Ionian

Ana had never sailed and did not know anyone else on the departure. She booked a single berth on a seven-day Ionian route in May, mostly because it was the cheapest way to test whether she liked being on a boat at all.

The crew turned out to be two couples and one other solo traveller. By the third evening the group had settled into a rhythm of swimming before dinner and cooking on board rather than eating ashore.

“I kept waiting for the awkward part. It never really arrived.”

Group of friendsWhole yacht

Eight friends, one yacht in Croatia

Tudor booked the whole boat as group leader and sent invites the same evening. Seven people completed their own details over the following fortnight, which meant he never had to collect documents by message.

The week was planned around swimming rather than distance. Two stops changed after the Wednesday forecast, and the group ended up in a quieter bay than the one originally on the route.

“The plan changing was fine. Finding out about it late would not have been.”

Experienced sailorSkipper-only

Already had the boat, needed local knowledge

Katrin’s group had chartered a 46-foot monohull in Montenegro and knew how to sail it. What they did not have was any sense of where to anchor, or which bays fill up first in September.

They posted a skipper request and compared three offers against the skipper profiles rather than on price alone. The one they chose had sailed that specific model for four seasons.

“We were paying for the coastline he already had in his head.”

Reading reviews well

Reviews are one signal, not the whole decision.

A high average tells you something. It does not tell you whether a particular week suits you.

  • The departure details for your exact dates
  • The skipper profile and their languages
  • The yacht, its cabins and its heads
  • The route, and how flexible it is
  • What is included and what is not
  • The cancellation terms for that departure
